[email protected] [email protected] Depto. de Ciencia de la Computaci on Universidad Cat olica de Chile Vicu~ na Mackenna 4860 (143) Santiago 22, Chile Abstract Petri-nets have been used to model and analyze business process behavior, both in pure form and as the semantics of visual formalisms. We and others have advocated the use of a restricted class of nets called free-choice nets. Restricting models to free-choice nets leads to a polynomial algorithm to decide a criterion for behavioral correctness that we call simple control, and to a theory of threads of control that explains behavioral anomalies. This paper shows that constructs used in most business process languages lead to free-choice nets, but there are behaviors that cannot be modeled using these constructs, like the cancellation of an activity. To model these behaviors, we introduce a novel behavioral construct called unbalanced connector, whose semantics is not freechoice.

Understanding Behavior of Business Process Models

Building real-world process models is hard, because processes having both parallelism and choice can have behavioral anomalies. Alas, the usual way to avoid these anomalies is by deening simple-minded models that inhibit parallelism, abstract away exceptional cases, or do not assure correct behavior. This paper gives a notion of correct behavior, the so-called simple control property, which imp...

Solving Bi-objective Model of Hotel Revenue Management Considering Customer Choice Behavior Using Meta-heuristic Algorithms

The problem of maximizing the benefit from a specified number of a particular product with respect to the behavior of customer choices is regarded as revenue management. This managerial technique was first adopted by the airline industries before being widely used by many others such as hotel industries. The scope of this research is mainly focused on hotel revenue management, regarding which a...

Application of the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process to the lead-free equipment selection decision

After 1 July 2006, a major challenge that the manufacturing industry has to confront now is the effect of the lead-free equipment system selection process on companies’ capital expenditure decision. With capital investment, the criteria may be financial (e.g. expected cash flows) and non-financial (e.g. product quality). We use a systems approach with the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (FAHP)...

Planning@SAP: An Application in Business Process Management

Business processes control the flow of activities within and between enterprises. Business Process Management is concerned, amongst other things, with the maintenance of these processes. In particular, it becomes ever more important to be able to quickly create modified processes for changed market conditions. We show that AI Planning can help with this, by automatically composing process skele...
